FOOTbridge Award 2018: The Soul of Old-Time Music

Beginning in 2002 FOOTMAD has given the FOOTbridge award to persons who make significant contributions to the fulfillment of our mission to promote, preserve and present traditional music and dance.

The theme for 2018 is the Soul of Old-time Music and  the FOOTbridge award goes to: Cathy Grant. A dedicated teacher, Cathy has nurtured the souls and talents of students at Fret & Fiddle in St. Albans and the John C Campbell Folk School in North Carolina. Several of her students have achieved national honors. One student, Jerrica Hilbert, who exemplifies this excellence, will be playing with Cathy in the presentation.

Cathy puts her heart and soul into her work. She takes the stage with her students for recitals and competitions. She created a student band aptly named, Fiddlers Galore. Their talent and pride result an expression of joy and a wall of sound. When Fiddles Galore plays for a FOOTMAD dance, the evening is elevated to a grand time indeed!

Cathy does not seek the spotlight however. When asked to accept the award, she requested that the evening be a time to honor Black History Month. So, the soul food of local vendor, Sumthin’ Good, will nourish our bodies and the music and traditions of Angie Richardson, the Bare Bones trio and Bob Thompson will nourish our souls, as we honor both Cathy Grant and Black History Month in 2018.

Bare Bones

Becky Kimmons, Bill Kimmons and Mark Davis singing as Bare Bones have sent chills up and down spines all around the world with their a cappella harmonies via Public Radio International's Mountain Stage, and live, in person, on many concert stages. Their song list is varied, showcasing traditional songs dating back several centuries to contemporary songs, always with the distinctive sound that comes from unaccompanied singing rooted in Appalachia.

This concert is presented with financial assistance from the West Virginia Division of Culture and History, and the National Endowment for the Arts, with approval from the West Virginia Commission on the Arts.
